Has AI cut accountancy fees yet?

Why fees have fallen slower than owners expected.
What lowers yours, for both sides of the desk.

Not by as much as owners expected, and for a clear reason.
AI is good at the assembly work in a set of accounts: coding transactions, matching receipts, drafting the pack.
But a fee also pays for judgement and for someone standing behind the figures.
That part has not got cheaper, and it should not.

Why fees have not fallen faster

Owners on small-business forums ask it directly.
Accounts should take far less time now, so why has the bill not moved?
Three reasons explain it, and none of them is that accountants are hiding the saving.

  • —The slow part is often the records, not the accounts. An accountant who receives a shoebox of receipts spends the hours sorting it, and no tool removes that on their side.
  • —The work has grown. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax began in April 2026 for higher-income sole traders and landlords, which turns one return a year into quarterly updates.
  • —Responsibility does not automate. When your accountant files a return, they answer for it.
That professional judgement and liability is a large share of what you pay for.

Should you swap your accountant for AI?

For understanding a rule or checking a figure, an AI chat tool helps.
For accounts and tax returns you file, no.
A chat tool will give you a confident answer with nobody behind it.
When it is wrong, HMRC deals with you, not the tool.

Mind what you paste in, too.

What lowers your fee

  • —Connect your bank to your accounting software so transactions arrive coded rather than typed.
  • —Capture receipts as you go with a phone app, instead of collecting them for the year end.
  • —Answer your accountant’s questions in one go. Chasing is billable time on their side.
  • —Ask how they use AI and whether a cleaner set of records would change your quote.
A good practice will tell you.

If you run a practice

Clients are asking this question, so answer it before they do. Show them where AI saves time in your process, and share part of the saving through faster turnaround or a fixed fee for clean records. Our guide to what AI can and cannot do in accountancy sets out where the line sits.

The short version

AI has made the assembly in accounts cheaper, and owners who keep tidy records feel it first.
The judgement and the signature cost what they did.
Keep your accountant for those, and send them records that leave nothing to sort.
